Drip Ninjas Restoration of the Midlands | Water And Fire Damage Restoration

The 2024 hurricane season runs June 1, 2024 until November 30, 2024.  It is crucial to take proactive steps to safeguard your home and family from potential water damage resulting from a hurricane. As an experienced water restoration professional, I’ve witnessed firsthand the devastation that hurricanes can cause. Proper preparation is key to mitigating damage, staying safe and ensuring a quicker recovery. Here are essential steps to help you get ready for hurricane season.

1. Inspect and Maintain Your Home: Begin with a thorough inspection of your property. Check for any signs of wear and tear on your roof, gutters, and downspouts. Ensure they are free from debris and securely attached to prevent leaks. Inspect windows and doors for any cracks or gaps, and seal them appropriately. Don’t forget to check your basement or crawl spaces for potential water entry points. Have a plan to secure any outside furniture. Homes in coastal areas my have storm shutters, know where they are and how to install them.

2. Secure Utilities(If possible): Protect your home’s utilities by elevating electrical panels, water heaters, and furnaces above potential flood levels. Consider placing sandbags around devices located outside.  Anchor any fuel tanks and ensure your backup generator is in good working condition and fueled up.  Also have extra fuel. Generators should not be run indoors!

3. Develop an Evacuation Plan: Plan an evacuation route. Identify the nearest shelters and ensure all family members know the plan. Keep a list of emergency contacts handy and communicate your plan with relatives or friends.  Have a supply of bottled water, can goods, batteries, full tank of gas in the car, etc.  Power could be out for several weeks, so be prepared.

4. Document Your Property: Take photos AND videos of your home’s current state, both inside and out.  Capture all contents, including clothes and any high value items. This documentation will be invaluable for insurance claims if your home sustains damage. Have a copy of your homeowners insurance for review.

Stay informed about weather updates, and don’t hesitate to seek professional help if you encounter significant water issues. Safety is your number one priority. Being proactive not only protects your property but also ensures the safety and well-being of your loved ones. Stay safe this hurricane season!
